On interpath interference suppression by MLSE detection in DS/SS systems

چکیده
In wideband DS/SS systems the Rake receiver is commonly used to attain a diversity gain by taking advantage of the good correlation properties of the spreading codes in order to separate the multipath components of the received signal. However, at low spreading gains the good correlation properties of the spreading codes are lost and the Rake receiver performance is severely degraded by interpath interference (IPI), which in general consists of intersymbol interference (ISI) and symbol self interference (SSI). Hence, means have to be found to suppress this interferences. The optimum DS/SS receiver derived from the MLSE criterion can be separated into a Rake demodulator followed by an MLSE detector based on a metric similar to that of the Ungerboeck MLSE receiver for unspreaded systems. In this paper it is shown that the MLSE receiver combats the ISI but not the SSI. Thus, in channels with SSI the performance bound for DS/SS systems depends on the actual SSI distortion and the diversity bound can not be approached. Furthermore it is shown that in the case of a chip synchronous system the optimum receiver can be implemented as a modified MLSE detector working directly on the chip matched filter output sampled at chip rate.

A Chip-Rate MLSE Equalizer for DS-UWB Systems
A major limitation for the performance of direct sequence ultrawideband (DSUWB) systems at high data rate is the interpath interference (IPI). The maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) receiver operating at the chip-rate, which optimally combats interpath interference, is known in the literature for the direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) systems. However, the performance of this re...

In wideband DS-SS systems the Rake receiver is commonly used to utilize the multipath diversity of the mobile radio channel. In the case of good spreading code correlation properties the multipath components of the received signal can be separated with low interpath interference (IPI). At low spreading gains the good correlation properties of the spreading codes are lost and the Rake receiver p...

It is well known that the electromagnetic interference (EMI) radiated from industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) apparatus seriously degrades the performance of wireless communication systems. In this paper, an ISM-band wireless local area network (WLAN) which employs a direct sequencespread spectrum (DS-SS) system is designed to be sufficiently robust and reliable to operate in the presence...

The use of active narrow-band interference (NBI) suppression in direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) communications has been extensively studied. In this paper, we address the problem of optimum coding-spreading tradeoff for NBI suppression. With maximum likelihood decoding, we first derive upper bounds on the error probability of coded systems in the presence of a special class of NBI, name...

The push toward more efficient and flexible use of the radio spectrum has led to the consideration of the overlay of spread-spectrum (SS) communication networks on preexisting narrow-band networks. Such systems are already in widespread and rapidly expanding use in the lightly regulated spectrum where personal networking is largely centered and they are of increasing interest in the more tightl...
